HEY LEADS THE WAY, YOUNG PR’S FOR MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY FRIDAY

HIGHLIGHTS

MARYSVILLE, Mich. – The 2022 season and a new era got underway Friday (Sept. 2) as first-year head coach Matt Fecht led the Macomb Men's Cross Country team into action for the first time since being named the program's new leader earlier this year. The Monarchs were solid in their 2022 debut and went on to post a third place finish with a team score of 85 points.

Former All-Region performer (2020) Jack Hey returned after a one year absence and started his climb back into form with a team-best 8K time of 31:14.9 Friday afternoon at Marysville City Park. Hey (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) used his previous experience to navigate a hot day and tricky course to finish 19th overall in a competitive field. The sophomore was followed immediately by two other Monarchs as newcomer Grady Masanga (New Baltimore, Mich./Athlone Boys School) and Andrew Young (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) placed 20th and 21st, respectively, in the season-opening race.

Masanga burst onto the scene with a time of 31:32.2, while Young earned a new collegiate PR at 31:38.2, eclipsing his previous best of 31:50.5 set at last year's Region XII/MCCAA Championship Meet.

Jacob Kimball (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lake Shore High School) was impressive in his collegiate debut and went on to record a 25th place finish with a time of 32:58.6 and returner Brandon Ung (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) powered his way through the finish line at 33:25.9 for a 26th place finish. Thomas Flowers (Detroit, Mich./Fraser) checked in at 34th overall to conclude a successful overall day for the Monarchs to open the season.

The Monarchs will return to action in two weeks at the GRCC Raider Invite.
